Summary:

Encouragement for the New Life

Assurance - though you will continue to experience this… (ch. 7), you will also experience this… (ch. 8).
Spirit (Romans 5:5) - 21 times in ch 8/34 time in Romans.
In Romans 8:1-4, Paul identifies the believer as set free from condemnation to life in the Spirit.
In Romans 8:5-8, he identifies a significant area of difference - the mind set on the Spirit (v. 5)
Here (Romans 8:9-11), he highlights the “life” part of “the Spirit of Life” (v. 1),

Different ways of saying the same thing

Notice the progression…
“in the Spirit”
“the Spirit of God dwells in you”
“have the Spirit of Christ”
“Christ is in you” (v. 10)
“the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you” (v. 11)
“His Spirit who dwells in you” (v. 11)
Different ways of saying the same thing.

What does it mean to be in the Spirit? (v. 9)

“Dwells” - inhabit, occupy, reside (1 Corinthians 3:16)
1 Corinthians 3:16 ESV
Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?
Notice that it does not say that you do not HAVE the flesh. Being IN the flesh or NOT being IN the flesh is about HAVING or NOT HAVING the Spirit. In either case, you will still HAVE the flesh.
Notice, you either belong to Christ or you don’t. There’s no middle ground. Because, you either have the Spirit or you don’t. There’s no middle ground. If you belong to Christ, you have the Spirit. If not, you don’t. If you have the Spirit, you belong to Christ. If you don’t, you don’t. This you can know.

What is the benefit of being in the Spirit? (v. 10)

“the body is dead because of sin”
“body” - physical, not “flesh” (10 times in vv. 3-9), plus “mortal bodies” (v. 11; Romans 6:12)
“dead” - adjective, description, dying (again, “mortal bodies” v. 11)
“because of sin”
“the spirit is life because of righteousness”
“spirit” - Holy Spirit or man’s spirit (caps for ESV vs. NASB)
Immediate context - contrast with physical body
Surrounding context - “Spirit of life” (v. 2; all about the Holy Spirit)
Inseparable - It must include both...
What part of the believer is alive? Not the body, but the spirit.
What comes into a believer to give this life? The Holy Spirit.
“life” - noun, thing, get a life, believers have a life
“because of righteousness” (Romans 3:22)
Life in the human spirit in the Holy Spirit.
Spiritual living by the indwelling Spirit - evidence of life
( 1 John 3:24; 1 John 4:13;
The Holy Spirit is evidence of life (Romans 8:14; Romans 8:16)

What is the hope of being in the Spirit? (v. 11)

Life after death (1 Corinthians 15:53).
1 Corinthians 15:53 ESV
For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality.
We can believe in our resurrection as much as we believe in Christ’s resurrection (2 Corinthians 4:14).
2 Corinthians 4:14 ESV
knowing that he who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and bring us with you into his presence.
The Holy Spirit is the assurance of this (Ephesians 1:13–14).
Ephesians 1:13–14 ESV
In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.
(Romans 6:5; Romans 8:23; Romans 7:24)
2 Corinthians 4:16 ESV
So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day.
Galatians 2:20 ESV
I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
Benediction:
